Website calculator: people want a ballpark figure before they tell you their name

The question “how much does it cost” comes first and almost always goes unanswered. The site suggests leaving a request, the person does not want to give a phone number for an approximate figure, and moves on. A calculator breaks this loop: the visitor enters their own parameters, sees the order of magnitude of the amount or the quantity of material needed, and then makes an informed decision. Those who find it too expensive filter themselves out — and that is also a result, because the manager does not spend an hour on them.

What's included

Complete list of work and what you get as a result

  • a calculator with your formula, agreed down to the last coefficient
  • an honest note that the figure is approximate and what exactly it does not include
  • a result that makes sense without a manager's explanation: not just the amount but what it is made up of
  • a transition from the calculation to an inquiry with the parameters already filled in
  • a way to update prices and coefficients without a developer
  • defined behavior for values outside the formula's range instead of a meaningless figure
  • working on a phone, where such calculations are done most often
  • analytics events: how many people finish the calculation and at which field they stop
When this service isn't right

What's not included — so there are no surprises at delivery

  • drawing up the calculation method itself on your behalf
  • a guarantee that the approximate figure will match the contract price
  • publishing your purchase prices and markup structure
  • engineering or design calculations that require a license
  • promises about the number of inquiries
Who it's for

Situations where this service delivers results

Scenario 1 of 4

A manufacturer whose price depends on size

Panels, structures, made-to-order products. A price per unit explains nothing until the person has calculated their own area or length.

We'll review your situation in a free audit
Free review of your formula

We look at whether your way of calculating can be turned into a calculator — and whether it is worth doing at all.

What we measure

  1. How you calculate nowA table, a file on the manager's computer or knowledge in someone's head. The last case is the most common and the hardest: the formula first has to be drawn out and written down.
  2. How many parameters there really areThree fields make a calculator. Fifteen make a questionnaire nobody will finish. It is often better to calculate more roughly but get to the end.
  3. How close the figure will beIf the approximate amount differs from the contract price by a factor of two, the calculator does harm: the person arrives with a figure you will not confirm.
  4. What to do with atypical casesEvery business has orders outside the formula. You need to decide in advance what to show in such cases rather than output a random amount.
  5. Who will update the pricesA calculator with old prices is worse than none. If nobody is available to update them, that is the main argument against the whole idea.
  6. Show the amount to everyone or after contactThis is the owner's decision. We will show the consequences of both options: hiding the figure behind a form usually cuts the number of calculations several times over.

What you get

  • an answer on whether your calculation translates into a calculator
  • a draft of the fields and the formula based on the way you calculate
  • an estimate of the work broken down by stage
  • an honest answer if a calculator would do harm here

Timeline: 2–4 working days

Why is it free

The main question is not the code but whether you have a formula at all. Until it is drawn out and written down, any estimate would be guesswork.

What's next

You receive a draft formula and an estimate. Then you decide for yourself — the document stays with you.

What affects the price

Why two seemingly identical tasks are priced differently

  • Formula complexityMultiplying area by price takes a few days. A calculation with coefficients, lookup tables and exceptions for individual materials is a different task.
  • How ready the rules areIf the formula is already written down, we carry it over. If it lives in the manager's head, it first has to be drawn out — and that is usually the longest part.
  • Where prices come fromHard-coded prices are cheap and inconvenient. A separate table for editing costs more at the start. Pulling prices from your accounting system is a separate integration.
  • How the result looksA single figure is simple. A breakdown with a list of items, quantities of material and a margin is already a small document that has to be clear.
  • Transition to an inquiryA plain button is minimal work. Passing all parameters to a CRM with named fields, so that the manager sees the calculation, is a separate scope.
  • Number of scenariosOne calculator for one service is simple. Several different ones for different lines of business are almost several tasks, even if they share a look.

Process steps

Transparent stages with approval at every step

Total duration:5–25 days

  1. Getting the formula out

    2–4 working days

We work out how you calculate now: tables, files, the manager's habits. We write it down as rules that can be checked. This is the most important stage of the whole job.

  2. Agreeing the fields

    1–3 working days

We decide what to ask the person and what to fill in ourselves. We cut unnecessary fields: every question reduces the number of people who get to the end.

  3. Calculation

    3–10 working days

We implement the formula, coefficients and exceptions, as well as the behavior for out-of-range values. We check the result against your manual calculations on real examples.

  4. Presentation of the result

    2–6 working days

We make the output clear: not a bare figure but what it is made up of and what it does not include. We test on a phone, because that is where most people calculate.

  5. Inquiry and analytics

    1–3 working days

We link the calculation to the form: the parameters go into the inquiry, and the manager sees exactly what the person calculated. We set up events to know where people drop off.

  6. Handover and updates

    1–2 working days

We show you how to change prices and coefficients yourselves and put it in writing. After that the 30-day warranty from the date the acceptance act is signed applies.

What we need from you

We can't start without this — best to prepare in advance

  1. the formula or rules you currently calculate by, in any form
  2. examples of real calculations to check the result against
  3. which parameters to ask the person and which to fill in ourselves
  4. what to do with cases that do not fit the formula
  5. whether to show the figure to everyone or only after contact details are left
  6. who on your side accepts the work
If something is missing — let us know, we'll help you gather it or do it as a separate task.
FAQ

Most frequently asked questions — with concrete answers

We have no formula; our manager estimates from experience. What do we do?

This is the most common case, and it is not hopeless. We take a dozen real quotes, look at what the figure actually depended on, and write it down as rules together with your manager. The result is rougher than the manager's estimate — and that is usually enough, because a calculator gives the order of magnitude of the amount, not the final figure.

And if the calculated amount does not match the contract price?

There will always be a discrepancy; the question is its size. It is acceptable when the figure differs within limits you are prepared to explain; it is unacceptable when it is off by a factor of two. So we state on screen from the start what the calculation includes and what it does not, and show a range instead of a single figure when needed.

How many fields should there be?

The fewer, the more people finish the calculation. The practical rule is up to five, and each additional one has to earn its place. If there are objectively many parameters, it is better to calculate roughly from three than precisely from fifteen that nobody will fill in.

Should we show the result only after the visitor leaves a phone number?

You can, and we will do it that way if you insist, but to be honest, the number of calculations then drops several times over. A person who does not trust you yet will not hand over their contact details for an approximate figure. The compromise that usually works: show the amount, and ask for contact details for a detailed quote.

Who will update the prices?

This has to be decided before we start, because the implementation depends on the answer. If you update them, we build a separate screen or table. If nobody is available to update them, it is more honest not to build a calculator at all: outdated prices are worse than none.

Can it calculate the amount of material instead of money?

Yes, and often that is more useful. The question “how many bags do I need for a hundred square meters” has a definite answer and does not depend on your pricing policy. A calculator like that also attracts people who are looking for an answer rather than a supplier — and later they remember where they found it.

How long does it take?

10 to 28 working days. A simple formula with three fields takes a week. A calculation with coefficients, lookup tables and passing the parameters to a CRM is closer to the upper limit. The longest part is usually not the programming but getting the formula out of the manager's head.

Will it bring more inquiries?

We do not promise a number. What definitely changes is the nature of the inquiries: people come with parameters and a sense of the order of the figure, and some of the poor-fit ones drop out on their own. We set up analytics events so you can see how many calculations turn into inquiries and judge by your own data.

  • We work under a contract

There is no price list on the site on purpose: the same work differs several times over between two clients, and a “from” figure explains nothing in that case. First a free audit — we count your pages, duplicates and speed — then we name the sum and the deadline and fix both in the contract.
